Pitch Intent allows coaches and players to record where a pitcher intended to throw a pitch and compare that location with the actual measured pitch location.

Once Pitch Intent is set, Trackman compares the intended location with the measured pitch location and calculates the distance between the two.  

Where is Pitch Intent Available?

Pitch Intent is available in Pitching Sessions, LiveAB Sessions, and Dashboard Views that include the Strike Zone Location Chart.

Note: Pitch Intent is not currently available in the Trajectory View.  

Setting Pitch Intent for the Next Pitch

When Pitch Intent is available, you can use the Next pitch to define the intended location before the pitch is thrown.

1. Select "Next" in the pitch list.
2. Press and hold the desired location on the Strike Zone Location Chart.
3. An asterisk (*) will appear on the chart to represent the intended pitch location.
4. Throw the pitch. 

The selected Pitch Intent remains active for future pitches until it is changed or cleared. This allows a pitcher working repeatedly to the same location to continue without setting the intent before every pitch.  

Viewing Pitch Intent After the Pitch

Once Trackman receives the pitch location, the application compares the measured pitch location with the selected Pitch Intent.

The Strike Zone Location Chart displays the Pitch Intent marker (*), the actual pitch location, and the distance between the intended and actual locations.  

For pitches that finish very close to the intended location, the display is simplified. Distances of less than 1 inch are displayed as <1 in, and when the distance is less than 3 inches, no connecting line is displayed.

Changing or Editing Pitch Intent

Pitch Intent can be adjusted at any point during a session.

1. Select the pitch you want to update.
2. Select the Edit icon.
3. Select Edit Pitch Intent.
4. Tap the new intended location on the strike zone.
5. Exit the Pitch Intent editor to return to the dashboard.

While editing Pitch Intent, the dashboard temporarily focuses on the selected pitch so the intended and actual locations can be reviewed more clearly.  

Clearing Pitch Intent

From the Pitch Intent editor, select Clear Intent to remove the intended location.

If the Pitch Intent for a previous pitch is edited or cleared, only that pitch is updated. Future pitches are not changed.  

Reviewing Individual Pitches

When the pitch list is grouped by Pitch, Trackman displays the Pitch Intent associated with the selected pitch.

This allows coaches and players to review pitch-by-pitch execution and compare the intended location with the actual result.  

Reviewing Pitch Groups 

Pitch Intent can also be used to evaluate command across multiple pitches.

Expanded Pitch Group

When a pitch group is expanded, each pitch's Pitch Intent marker is displayed on the strike zone. The selected pitch also displays its individual Intent Distance, allowing coaches to review how consistently the pitcher executed the intended locations throughout the group. 

Collapsed Pitch Group

When a pitch group is collapsed, Trackman displays a Command Performance Visualization based on the average distance between the intended and actual pitch locations within the group.
A smaller circle represents better command, while a larger circle represents a greater average miss distance. This provides a quick way to compare command across pitch types, groups, or different portions of a session. 

Pitch Intent Data

For organizations using Trackman data outside of the B1 application, Pitch Intent information is also available after the session.

The following Pitch Intent fields are supported:

• PlateIntentHeight
• PlateIntentSide
• IntentDistance

These fields are available through supported post-session APIs and can also be included as optional columns in CSV exports. Pitch Intent is also supported through Play-by-Play metadata for integration into compatible internal tools and workflows.
