iPad | How to Use the iPhone & Apple Watch Apps

The TrackMan Baseball iPhone and Apple Watch companion apps enables you to view real-time pitching and hitting data captured by a B1 system.

This guide outlines three different connection scenarios for using the iPhone app (“Trackman Baseball Metrics”) and/or the Apple Watch app with your B1 system. The Apple Watch app will automatically install via a sync'd iPhone or can be manually installed via the App Store accessed directly from the Apple Watch. In all scenarios, the iPhone and Apple Watch connect directly to the iPad app using Apple’s proprietary frameworks via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and/or Watch Connectivity (WC). These connections do not require Wi-Fi and the effective range between the iPad and iPhone/Watch is limited by these technologies—typically 65 to 80 feet (20 to 25 meters).

The following versions of Apple OS and Trackman apps are supported:

Trackman Baseball iPad app: Version >=1.75
Trackman B1 firmware: Version >1.6.4
iPad device with iOS: Version >= 16.0
iPhone device with iOS: Version >= 18.2
Apple watch watchOS: Version >= 11.0 (Series 6 or newer)

Below a diagram of the various connection modes:

Scenario 1 - Connecting an iPhone

The iPhone companion app allows you to view real-time pitching or hitting data from a B1 system. Measurements will be generated both while in a session and outside a session.

To begin, connect your iPhone Trackman app to the iPad Trackman app (see connection steps below). Once connected and within range, the app will display the most recent pitch or hit tracking measurements in real time.

Key Features Include:

  1. Customizable metric tiles: View 6 configurable tiles showing selected performance metrics.
  2. Visuals: Access additional screens by swiping sideways to see data visualizations such as Strike Zone, Movement, Release points and Contact position.
  3. If in a session, then pitcher/batters name and pitch#/hit# will display in the app.

You can connect up to three (3) iPhones to a single iPad running the TrackMan B1 app. While more connections might work, they are not officially supported.

Connection Guide

All installation and connection steps are initiated from the Trackman Baseball app on the iPad so the iPad user has control over who and when iPhones connect:

  1. Click the Watch icon in the App Header.

    4.png
  2. You will then see the connection dialog. Scan the QR code with your iPhone to get a link to the AppStore and then install the app; this is a one-time action.5.png
  3. Start the iPhone app and keep the iPhone within a few feet of the iPad. The iPhone app will automatically start scanning for the iPad and when in range the apps will automatically connect. Thereafter you may move the iPhone further away from the iPad, up to the supported range mentioned above.
    • The iPad will keep scanning as long as the menu is open to allow for multiple phones to connect.
    • The iPad dialog will show the number of connected iPhones.
    • The iPhone will display an empty set of 6 tiles when it is connected.
  4. The iPhone is now ready to receive measurements from the iPad.
  5. The app will also receive measurements if running in the background and will display the most recent measurement.

If the iPhone companion app moves out of range or loses connection, the iPad will attempt to automatically re-establish the connection for approximately 30 seconds before timing out and closing the connection attempt. In this case you then must reestablish connection as outlines above.

Important notes on Disconnection:

  • There is currently no option to manually disconnect an iPhone from the iPad app.
  • Similarly, the iPhone app does not offer a disconnect button. To force a disconnection, you must manually force-close the app on the iPhone (swipe up from the app switcher).
  • The iPad cannot immediately detect an abrupt disconnection (e.g., if the iPhone app is force-closed). In such cases, it may continue to show the iPhone as connected for up to one minute before updating the connection status.

Scenario 2 - Connecting an Apple Watch via the iPhone

(Total number of concurrent connected Watch devices limited by number of concurrent connected iPhone devices)

The Apple Watch companion app allows you to view real-time pitching or hitting data from your B1 system. Measurements will be generated both while in a session and outside a session. The app supports two connection modes:

  • Connection via a Paired iPhone App (use this when you want to connect multiple Apple Watch devices or for extended range if both the B1, iPhone and Apple Watch all are connected to a shared Wi-Fi)
  • Connection to the Primary iPad App (see Scenario 3)

The Watch app is bundled with the iPhone companion app and will be installed automatically when you install the iPhone app as explained in scenario 1. When connecting using via the iPhone app, then the following conditions must be met:

  • The Watch must be paired with the iPhone running the Trackman app.
  • The iPhone must be connected to the iPad (see scenario 1).

Key Features Include:

  1. The Watch app displays up to 4 configurable tiles with real-time metrics.
  2. A strike zone visualization for pitching (pitchers view), hitting (batter’s view and live AB(catcher’s view).
  3. The app remembers your dashboard layout (tile selection and order) and restores it on next launch.

Connection Guide - Via the iPhone App

  1. Connect your iPhone to the iPad as explained above.
  2. Once the app is downloaded on the iPhone it should automatically be downloaded to the paired watch as well.
  3. To connect the watch through the iPhone, do the following:
    • Ensure that the iPhone app has been opened at least once, since you need to allow Bluetooth through the iPhone app.
    • Start the watch app on the watch.
    • Click “iPhone“ button.
    • Follow the connection steps in Scenario 1.
    • Now once the iPhone app is connected to the iPad the watch should show 4 empty tiles(or the last saved dashboard if it is not the first time the watch app has been used.)
    • The watch will now receive measurements from the iPhone ones the iPhone has received it from the iPad.

The iPhone app will save the latest measurement it received. If the Apple Watch is out of range/loses connection to the iPhone, the saved measurement will be sent upon reconnection to ensure both the apps are displaying the same measurement.

Scenario 3 - Connecting an Apple Watch to the iPad

(supports only 1 concurrent Watch device)

When connect to iPad is chosen, the Watch app will use Bluetooth(BLE) to connect to the iPad app, and receive measurements whenever the B1 produces a measurement (both in and out of session).

Connection Guide - Via Apple Watch App

In this scenario, you do not need an iPhone and you may install the Trackman watchOS app directly via the Apple Watch Appstore. To connect the watch directly to the iPad, do the following:

  1. Start the watch app on the watch.
  2. Click “iPad“ button on the watch
  3. Press the “Connect” button on the iPad and position the Apple Watch physically next to the iPad (<1 inch).
    • Once the connection is made, the iPad will show that the watch has been connected, and the watch will show 4 empty tiles(or the last saved dashboard if it is not the first time the watch app has been used)
    • The order in which the two buttons are pressed does not matter
  4. Once connected, the “Connect” button on the iPad will be changed to a “Disconnect” button, which when pressed will disconnect the watch. When disconnecting the watch manually, the watch must be in range of the iPad, if not it will eventually disconnect itself.
  5. The watch is now ready to receive measurements from the iPad.

If the Watch app moves out of range or loses connection, it will attempt to automatically re-establish the connection for approximately 5 minutes before timing out, closing the connection and resetting itself to the initial screen.
