This article serves as a fundamental introduction to baseball, covering the basic layout of the field and the structure of a game.
The Field
- Infield: A diamond-shaped area containing four bases: first, second, third, and home plate.
- Outfield: The grassy area beyond the infield, extending to a wall or fence.
- Territory: Action takes place in fair territory (inside the white lines). Balls hit outside these lines are in foul territory and are out of play.
Teams and Positions
- Teams:
- Games are played between a home team (typically wearing white) and an away team (typically wearing gray).
- Defense (9 players):
- Positioned in the field, divided into the outfield (left, center, right fielders) and infield (pitcher, catcher, first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, third baseman).
- Offense (9 players):
- Batters come up one at a time to home plate to hit the ball thrown by the pitcher.
Game Structure
- Scoring: Offensive players aim to hit the ball and run around all three bases to home plate to score a run.
- Outs: The defense tries to prevent scoring by recording three outs.
- Innings: A game consists of nine innings, each split into a top and bottom half. The away team bats first (top), and the home team bats second (bottom).
- Winning: The team with the most runs after nine innings wins.
