This article covers some basic concepts, vocabulary and rules of baseball.
Key Baseball Concepts
- The Ballpark & Diamond: The game is played in a stadium, often called a ballpark, on a field shaped like a diamond.
- Positions: Nine players per team cover various spots, including the pitcher (throwing from the mound), the catcher (behind home plate), and various fielders.
- Innings: A game consists of nine innings. Each team gets to bat until three outs are made against them in the top or bottom half of the inning.
- Scoring: A team scores a point (a run) when a player successfully touches all four bases and returns to home plate.
Rules & Vocabulary
- Strikes and Outs: A batter can be struck out if they swing and miss three times. Three outs end a team's turn at bat.
- Walks: If a pitcher throws four balls outside the strike zone, the batter gets a walk and advances to first base.
- Hits: Players can get a single, double, triple, or a home run (hitting the ball over the fence).
- Safe/Tag: Runners are safe if they reach a base before the ball, or out if they are tagged with the ball while off base.
