This FAQ describes functionality available in the Trackman Baseball App version 1.35 or higher (November 2020).
Overview
The TrackMan Portable system can control a separate iPhone or iPad to automatically capture video of your pitching/batting practice together with TrackMan data.
The TrackMan iPad App will be your primary device used to view and tag ball data whereas the separate iOS device is running a TrackMan camera App that will capture video without requiring any user interaction. The separate iOS device is fully managed via the TrackMan Baseball application and video is transferred and viewed directly in the TrackMan Baseball App for each pitch/hit via the B1 wifi connection.
We recommend you set up the separate iOS device on a tripod and - if you plan to record for longer than 1hr - then attach an external battery pack/charger to the iOS device.

1. Run a practice session while capturing video and TrackMan data
1.1 Start a session and view video during a session
- Tap the green "new session" button.
- On the session-type toggle the "Setup external camera" to ON which will then instruct the app to guide you through camera connection steps and communicate with the external iOS camera to capture and transfer video while tracking data.
- On the next screen, select "TrackMan Camera App" and follow the instructions to download and launch the camera app on your second iOS device. Then connect your iOS device to the B1's wifi. Once completed, the TrackMan Baseball App will automatically detect the camera is ready and the "Searching for Trackman Camera Application" will change to "Camera Connected."
- Then configure the desired video clip duration using the timeline handles in the lower right of the configuration screen: The TrackMan app will automatically capture video from x milliseconds before release/contact to y milliseconds after release/contact. All other settings (fps, quality, etc) are set on the TrackMan camera app (displayed as read-only in the iPad App)
- Remember, a longer clip duration and higher FPS will result in a longer delay for the video to transfer and appear in the app during a session. We recommend you start with 120fps and -50ms to +500ms. If you are recording indoors toggle "fast shutter" ON.
- Tap "Next" in the upper right and your system is ready to capture data and video indicated by a green video camera icon and a green wave.
- Select the video dashboard and throw a pitch. When the B1 detects a pitch it will communicate with the iOS device to capture a video and automatically transfer the video to the app. You will see a progress indicator in the video section:
- A few notes to the above screenshot. There are two parts to the experience:
- First, the video is captured and processed by the external iOS device. During this time, the camera status will turn orange and the system will NOT be able to capture any subsequent videos. Once the video processing is complete then the camera will be ready for the next recording and the status will turn green.
- Thereafter, the video is then sent to the app. During this time the system CAN capture a subsequent video even if the previous video is still transferring. When the video is received it will automatically display in the video section of your dashboard. You will also see a small green video icon in the pitch-list on the left sidebar in the app.
- Anytime before, during, or after capturing a pitch you may tag the pitch.
- The B1 system will always prioritize capturing data over video. This means even if the camera is busy when a player throws a subsequent pitch the system will capture data for that pitch. If the camera was not ready then the pitch will not have any video associated.
- During a session you may make adjustments to video settings: Simply tap on the green camera icon to bring up the video configuration dialog and make necessary changes to clip duration and/or make adjustments on the iOS camera app.
- Be aware while the video configuration dialog is open the system will not capture videos.
1.2 After a session
- After you stop a session, you can backup/synchronize videos to the cloud so they will be available to view on other iPads for remote coaches, players, or analysts within your organization.
- Whenever your iPad is connected to the internet it will synchronize data and videos to the cloud. Note: video sync will take some extra time (5-10 seconds per video depending on length and fps). You can monitor the upload progress in the session sync details in the left side-pane of the app by tapping the cloud icon for the desired session as illustrated below:
1.3 Download videos to other iPads
Coaches, analysts, or players who have iPads and account logins to your organization will be able to download video and analyze on their iPads. Videos are NOT downloaded per default but instead upon demand when you view a pitch/hit: Select the video dashboard and tap the button to download just that video or all videos in a session. (note that downloading all videos in a session may take a while)
The video icon in the left side-bar pitch/hit list will be orange when videos are up/downloading and green when they are downloaded to the device.
